In 2025, smart homes are finally reaching their turning point. For over a decade, the so-called “Smart Home Cartel” — Amazon, Google, and Apple — has been promising us a connected future. But instead of playing nice, they’ve built walled gardens, locked devices, and endless privacy concerns. That’s why many people gave up on smart home tech years ago.
The good news? There’s another way. Home Assistant isn’t part of the Cartel. It’s open-source, runs locally, respects your privacy, and lets all your devices — new and old — work together.
What is Home Assistant?
Home Assistant (HA) is like the central brain of your home. It runs on inexpensive hardware, like a Raspberry Pi (about $110), and connects to hundreds of devices from different brands. Because it runs locally, you’re not dependent on cloud services. That means more privacy, faster automations, and no outages when the internet goes down.
Integration Power
Unlike the Cartel platforms, HA is not proprietary. It supports hundreds of integrations with devices from major companies and even lets you retrofit old “dumb” devices into your smart home using low-cost adapters. If it plugs in or connects, chances are HA can control it.
Automations: Rube Goldberg Would Be Proud
If you’ve used a smart switch before, you know the basics: turn on a light at sunset, or trigger a plug when motion is detected. But HA takes automations to another level. You can create everything from simple point-and-click logic to advanced conditional workflows.
Examples from some of our own setups:
A “Work Mode” button turns on all my office lights at full brightness.
A “Mood Scene” dims the lights to 20% hot pink and starts soft music.
When I leave, all lights and TVs shut off.
If my dog stays home, HA leaves the lights at 50% and plays “Dog TV” videos.
NFC tags trigger custom actions — guests can scan them to play music or change lighting without installing an app.
A physical button by the exit door activates the most-used functions coming or going.
This is where HA shines: logic, creativity, and total control.
Dashboards: The Smart Home Control Center
Dashboards are the icing on the cake. They’re web-based, customizable, and accessible from any device — phone, tablet, wall panel, or laptop. You can make them as simple or advanced as you want.
On my dashboards, I can:
Control TVs (input, volume, and casting media).
Monitor weather, energy usage, and room temperatures.
See my calendar, stock, and crypto quotes.
Run a Music Assistant that groups multiple speakers (like Sonos) and even syncs playback to TVs.
- Manage cameras, alarms, and security sensors.
For some of our clients, dashboards have been game-changing:
A custom alarm panel to alert if an elderly family member exits unexpectedly.
Full control of 34 TVs at a sports bar.
Voice Assistant & Accessibility
Home Assistant even includes a private, cloud-free voice assistant. This makes smart homes accessible for elderly users or anyone who prefers speaking commands over tapping screens. Unlike Alexa or Siri, your voice stays in your home — not on a server farm.
Make any device Smart!
Shelly relays are a simple, affordable way to bring smart control to almost any electrical device in your home or business. For only about $15 more on Amazon, you can turn ordinary switches, lights, fans, or outlets into smart devices that integrate with platforms like Home Assistant, Alexa, or Google Home. They are small, Wi-Fi enabled modules that fit behind standard wall switches or inside junction boxes, giving you app and automation control without replacing your existing hardware. This makes them a cost-effective way to expand smart home functionality without committing to expensive proprietary systems.
Tip for your Electrician
When talking to your electrician about installing a Shelly relay, simply explain that it’s a small in-line smart switch module that sits behind the wall switch or inside the electrical box.
Provide them with the relay and say: “Please wire this Shelly relay in between the power supply and the load, just as you would a traditional switch, making sure the neutral and line connections are secured.”
Remind them to check the amperage and voltage ratings on the device to ensure it matches your circuit. Electricians will immediately understand how to wire it once they see the diagram that comes with the product.
Getting Started with Home Assistant is Simple
A basic Home Assistant setup can run on a Raspberry Pi for just over $100. From there, you can expand as little or as much as you want. Start with lights or sensors, then add dashboards, voice control, and more complex automations as you grow comfortable.

Getting Started with Home Assistant (For Beginners)
Starting with Home Assistant can feel intimidating at first — you’ve probably heard it’s “powerful but technical.” That’s true, but here’s the secret: once the initial setup hurdle is behind you, everything else becomes a lot of fun.
The First Step: Installation
Home Assistant needs a device to run on. The most common option is a Raspberry Pi 5, which costs about $110. Once installed, it becomes the “brain” of your smart home. From there, you can log in through any web browser or your phone.
But here’s the part that trips up beginners:
Flashing the software to a memory card
Setting up your network access
Getting the first devices connected
This is where many people give up.
Why You Should Ask for Help
The truth is, once you’re past the first 2 hours of setup, Home Assistant becomes user-friendly. But those first steps — flashing, configuring, connecting — are a common roadblock. That’s why most people benefit from a little professional guidance to get started right.
At offthegridit, we:
Install Home Assistant for you (Raspberry Pi or dedicated mini-PC).
Connect your first set of devices (lights, switches, sensors, cameras).
Set up your dashboards and a backup system.
Train you on how to use it day-to-day.
